The band Nero, not named for the famous Rome-burning, Christian-torturing Roman emperor of the same name, consists of electronic musicians Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray and vocalist Alana Watson. They happen to be one of favorite (or perhaps my only favorite?) dubstep band, so if I keep this segment going long enough, chances are I will post more of their songs.
First up, though, is the song “Me and You”, one of Nero’s first big hits.
When I watch the video, I can’t help but get a distinct Johnny Mnemonic sort of feel out of it, from the odd wrap-around visors that the band wears to the sort-of-if-you-squint resemblance of the video’s main actor to Keanu Reeves to the mysterious ‘you’re in the game’ sort of ending. I doubt that was Nero’s intent with the video however, as it seems like the visors, at least, are one of the band’s shticks.
Overall, I love the song, which is a structured cacophony of synthesizers, power chords, and drums, and I also love the video’s homage to classic 80’s video games like Double Dragon and Outrun.
It all almost makes me hunger for a good, old-fashioned side-scrolling beat ‘em up. How about you?
